Johann Heinrich Schwidde was born Feb 1, 1829 in Westerenger, a district within the town of Enger. Johann's mother died the following day, and his father, Zacharias remarried. Johann emigrated from Germany in 1851 with his parents and half-siblings.

Johann married Anna W. Huettkers on Sep 27, 1856. According to the 1900 census Anna bore five children, with three still living. Four of the five children are:
John Henry Schwidde (1857-1940)
Louis H. Schwidde (1860-1897)
Edward Schwidde (1865-1959)
Alvine F. Schwidde (1868-1904)
