Alexander leased the family farm and went to California during the Gold Rush. According to The Book of Dow, by Robert Piercy Dow (1929), Alexander abandoned the sea to become a farmer of North Searsport, Maine.

An inventory of Alexander's family in 1850 read: 13 children, 250 bushels of apples, 200 bushels of potatoes, 70 pounds of wool, and $25 worth of farm implements.
