3rd child and oldest son of Sidney Whitfield ("Whitt") and Mattie (Ray) Denson. His father and paternal grandfather, Seaborn McDaniel Denson, were active in the teaching and promoting of Sacred Harp (fa-sol-la) music throughout Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee in the early to mid 20th century. He learned Sacred Harp singing from his father and went on to study music at the Vaughn School of Music in Lawrenceburg TN and at the University of Alabama. He composed, directed, and promoted modern gospel music throughout his life. He was the owner of the Denson Music Publishing Company, which published collections of gospel songs as "Keys to the Kingdom" and "Songs of Zion." He also published the 1960 edition of the "Original Sacred Harp" songbook (Denson revision) and included in it a song that he had written entitled "Lord, We Adore Thee."
