Henry Stephenson (son of Jonathan Stephenson and unknown wife) was born in Scott County, Kentucky and died in Pendleton County, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Stevens on November 1, 1840 at Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky. His mother died when he was very young and his stepmother was very disagreeable - so he left home at an early age. He first lived on a 100 acre farm near Piner, Kenton County, KY. This farm was on Cruise's Creek and Henry was a neighbor of his uncle William B. Stephenson, who operated a grist mill nearby. Henry moved to Covington, KY about 1846 and worked there as a laborer for several years. He purchased a 100 acre farm about 1852 near Pleasant Ridge, Pendleton County, KY. The land was heavily timbered and had no buildings, so they felled trees and built a log house and other buildings. Henry was energetic and a good businessman and was highly esteemed by his friends and neighbors. He kept a kennel of thoroughbred foxhounds and raised thoroughbred saddle horses. He loved to fox hunt and conducted a big hunt each year drawing from all over the state and some from Ohio and Virginia. A second cousin of Henry's, Edna Stanley, gives the following account of a fox hunt on a visit to Kentucky "with fine Kentucky mounts, we entered into the sport which was really the most exhilarating I had ever experienced. The deep toned, protracted howl of the dogs was music to my ears. I really enjoyed it. I think I should like to become a fox hunter. Our horses were spirited and the wonder is that we came out without any serious accidents. The only sad feature to it was the fox was caught in his attempt to cross fields. The dog soon made an end of him. As he lay dead at our feet I could not keep back the tears. I thought what a noble struggle he had made for his life." Henry kept a huge kettle in the yard and at the end of the hunt they would cook cornbread and have a feast. He was given the nickname "fox-hunter". The family prospered and had three servants in 1880. Henry died in 1890 and Elisabeth in 1900. They are both buried in the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Pendleton County, KY, where they attended church and not far from their farm.
