Jack Eugene Nowels, 88, of rural Loudonville, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010.

He was born Feb. 11, 1922, to Francis Millard and Laura Kinsey Nowels on their northwest Holmes County farm. Jack graduated from Millersburg High School in 1940, where he was the first FFA State Farmer.

He worked on the family farm for two years before beginning classes at The Ohio State University as the first member of his family to attend college. At OSU he played in the marching band, and was on the varsity baseball team. He sang in the Men's Glee Club and was active in University Grange, where he met his wife, Lenna Elliott, whom he married Sept. 15, 1946. College was interrupted during WWII, as he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944-46.

Following graduation in 1948, Jack was hired as vocational agriculture teacher at Hayesville High School. He then moved to Loudonville High School in 1952, where he taught until his retirement in 1976. Over the years his FFA chapters won many district, state, and national awards and he was awarded the Honorary American Farmer Degree. In 1967, Jack received the Loudonville Distinguished Service Award.

Jack also managed a Little League baseball team for four years winning two championships. Later his FFA students helped prepare and lay out the first baseball fields in Loudonville west of the river.

He served as state president of the Ohio Vocational Agriculture Teachers' Association (OVATA) and as teacher/trainer in cooperation with the Ag Ed department at OSU. Jack had a life-long love of music and as president of the OVATA, he formed a men's barbershop quartet and sang tenor as this group performed for 18 years at state meetings, retirement parties and other special events. Jack sang in choirs and as a soloist at the First Presbyterian Church of Loudonville and Hopewell Presbyterian while serving as an elder at each.

After retiring from teaching, he served as farm representative for the Farmer's & Savings Bank. He then ran a successful campaign to become Holmes County Commissioner, where he served two terms from 1981-89.

Jack started OATS (Old Retired Teacher's Society), a group that continues to meet annually to renew old acquaintances. In 2001, former students surprised him with a banquet where 160 former students, Farm Club members, friends, and family attended. They established the Jack E. Nowels Endowed Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a Loudonville High School student entering college.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Lenna Elliott Nowels; daughters, Nancy (Steve) Frank and Sue (Kent) Cunningham, of Cincinnati, and a son, Kim Elliott (Joy) Nowels of Newbury; a daughter-in-law, Camille Nowels of Millersburg; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald Kinsey Nowels of Millersburg; and a sister, Reba Welstead of Nankin.

A son, Keith, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 19 from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home in Loudonville.

Services will be Saturday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Loudonville, with the Revs. Chris Stewart and Kathleen Walkerow officiating. Interment will be in Loudonville Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hopewell Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, 6900 State Route 754, Shreve 44676; or the Jack Nowels Endowed Scholarship Fund, Ashland County Community Foundation, 300 College Ave., Ashland 44805.
