After finishing grade school he attended Eureka College in Eureka IL. Coming to Nebraska, he studied at Doane College in Crete NE, and then taught in schools near Kramer for about fifteen years. He was a teacher of piano and organ. After his marriage the couple lived in Kramer until 1899. That year they moved to Lincoln NE where they had lived since that time. Here he took a position with the Post Office in which he continued until 1931, when he retired from active service.
