Mrs. Weatherby was born December 29, 1921 and passed away Sunday, November 21, 2010 in a local hospital. Mrs. Weatherby resided in Angelina County all of her life, with the majority of her years living in Lufkin.
She joined Lufkin's First United Methodist Church soon after her marriage in 1947. She taught children's Sunday school class and was a member of the Leach Class and Seeker Class for many years until her health declined and she was unable to attend. She continued to support her church with her prayers and tithes until her passing.
Mrs. Weatherby was preceded in death by her husband, E.H. Weatherby; one son, Walter L. Weatherby; her parents, Walter and Lucy (McKinney) Broker; two brothers, Milton C. Broker and Walter L. Broker, Jr.; and nephew, Charles Broker.
Those who survive her are her two sons, Mark E. Weatherby of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Michael R. Weatherby of Norfolk, Virginia; six grandchildren, Brian and Isobel Weatherby of Marianna, Florida, Paul Weatherby of Anchorage, Alaska, Wendy Weatherby of Norfolk, Virginia, Jennifer Weatherby of Virginia Beach, and Steven Mount of Texas City, Texas; one sister, Jeannette Woodard of Marshall, Texas; and sister-in-law, Juanita Weatherby of Lufkin, Texas. Other survivors are her nephew, Andy and Jana Woodard of Marshall; two nieces, Karyn and Corwin Tipton of Apple Springs, Texas and Nancy and Ken Reagan of Coppell, Texas; 2 great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Ms. Dixie became a wonderful cook. She was also talented at crochet and made many articles through the years as gifts for her friends. She was an avid reader as well and loved to play cards, dominoes, board games and crossword puzzles.
Pallbearers will be Brian Weatherby, Andy Woodard, Jonathan Walsh, Ken Reagan, Christopher Reagan and David LaBelle. The family expresses their sincere thanks to the health care workers at Memorial Medical Center, Stoneleigh Estates and Hospice in the Pines. Their caring and compassion are special gifts that cannot be measured. Mrs. Weatherby's family recognizes that the wonderful care given to Dixie by her special family cannot be measured by worldly degrees. Carmeleta Gray began to check on her because she was homebound about seven years ago and was joined by her daughter Kelley Skipper and grandchildren, Jonathan and Jessica, a little later. All of them helped Dixie with things she was unable to do for herself, one of which was bringing her communion each month. As time progressed, they came to love her wholeheartedly and when she was released from the hospital, they took her into their home to love and care for her until she reached her heavenly home; they greatly mourn her passing. However, God was working in this situation and new friends and loved ones have come together to celebrate Dixie's life; to love each other; and to keep her memory alive.
