Thomas was the son of Jonathan Midgley (1760-1818) and Martha Beaumont Midgley (1762-1801).

Married Ellen Hinchliffe on 30 September 182 in Almondbury, West Yorkshire, England. They were the parents of eleven children.

Thomas and Ellen immigrated in 1855. Ellen died on the journey to Utah while crossing the Platte River in Nebraska Territory.

Thomas was a shoemaker by profession.
