Cassandra C. Bowen, 82 years, 2 months, 28 days, died May 11, 1895. Cousin of Susan Verlinda (BEALL) WARD, wife of Ulysses. From Diary of Rev. James Thomas WARD (1820-1897) 8 Nov 1880 Off in early train, my dear wife accompanying, for Washington City, where in the house of Mr. C. B. Smith on 7th street road near Whitney avenue, at 6 o'clock, P.M.., I performed the marriage services for James Bowen esq. and Miss Cassandra (or as she has always been called Cassie) Cissell. His age is said to be 71 and hers 69. they loved in early life, half-century ago! Miss Cassie was a relation of my mother and her parents dying when she was a child, my mother took a sisterly interest in her and she was received into our family and cared for by my father and mother as their own children were. The little property she inherited from her own parents was husbanded for her by my father and when he died he left her an annuity for life of $500. She early became a cripple from the effects of disease. When Mr. Bowen asked her hand in marriage, she declined to give it. He married another lady, who bore him several children, but about two years ago, she died. Within a few months past Mr. Bowen has been pleading with Cassie to marry him, assuring her that he still loved her. Her consent at last gained, the marriage was consummated by the ceremony of this afternoon, I being Cassie's choice to perform it, and Mr. Bowen assenting, although he is a prominent member of the M. E. Church and would perhaps have preferred his own Pastor. After the marriage my wife and I rode in the carriage with them to the Railway Station, they leaving us there and going to Mr. Bowen's house. When we expressed the hope that they would be very happy in their married life, Mr. B. said, "Oh, I am sure we shall live together like two old chickens!"
