Murder Victim. She received recognition as the romantic interest of the world middleweight title boxer, Charles "Kid" McCoy, whose birth name was Norman Selby. As a silent film actor, Shelby had appeared in nine films. She died of a gunshot wound inflicted in Selby's Los Angeles apartment, where she was cohabiting with him. After being arrested, Selby pleaded not guilty but was convicted of manslaughter, serving his sentence at San Quentin before making parole in 1932. He stated that her death was suicide, while the prosecution claimed he murdered her for financial gain as he was apprehended the next morning, robbing her business. At the time of her death, she was married to a wealthy owner of an art gallery, Albert Moers, and the couple was in the middle of a divorce. In 1940 Selby, using his birth name, was found dead by his own hand in a hotel room.
