from the Alma Enterprise, Alma, Ks. 16 Aug 1901:
"Arthur Sutherland, son of Mayor Sutherland, has been dangerously ill this past week with appendicitis. Dr. Munn came up from Topeka and with Dr. Smith, performed an operation, removing the appendix."

from the Alma Signal, Alma, Ks. 24 Aug 1901:
"At Rest Arthur - These three words tell the sad, sad story. Yes, Artie, has gone to that home, made without hands, eternal in the heavens. Banks of flowers tenderly placed on his grave in the Alma Cemetery, hide from view the cruel clods. But a few short days of pain and all is over. No, not all, for the anguish and inconsolable grief of loving parents cannot be assuaged in a period of time so brief. 14 years, 5 months and 1 day, Arthur lived to brighten the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Sutherland – their only son. Quiet, amiable, and kind of heart, he endeared himself to all, and while the very thought of his dying is hard to bear, 'tis consoling to know that while living he did right because it was right. After impressive funeral services conducted by Rev. A. Schmid, a large concourse of sorrow friends followed the remains to their last resting place in the Lutheran Cemetery."
