Lawson was born to John and Polly Mary (Brown) McCloud. He married Elizabeth F. Pierce in Massachusetts.

Their first child, Mary E. McCloud, was born 11 Jul 1842 in Massachusetts. The family must have left soon after that date because Lawson bought land in Section 20 Dundee Township 24 October 1842. Six other children were born to the couple in Illinois; Ervin L. born Nov 1850, Ralph W.E. born ca 1852, George born ca 1853/4, Albert O. born ca 1855, Ida M. born Sep 1857, Frederick W. born April 1859.

After the birth of Frederick, the family moved to Prairie Township, Delaware, Iowa where they were enumerated in 1860. The family can be found on the Mitchell County, Iowa, census in 1870 and the Winneshiek County, Iowa, census in 1880.

Lawson and Elizabeth moved to Elgin, Kane, Illinois in 1894 and resided with their daughter Mary Schoonhoven at 370 N. Spring Street. Elizabeth died in 1897 and Lawson in 1899.
