James Johnston's parents are unknown at this time. Several people on Ancestry.com have James' father listed as Archibald Johnston who died in 1789, 13 years before James was born. Also, for James Johnston to have been married to Elizabeth Griffith, he would have had to have been jumping households and having children at both places. This marriage with Elizabeth Griffith does not fit, nor is verified.

James Johnston and Catherine Miller married September 21, 1824 in Monroe Co., VA and had nine children.
