Jonathan Barnes son of Stephan lived with his wife Elizabeth, in Southington on East St. in what is known as the Truman Barnes house and subsequently removed to his sons on Kensington road, near what is know as the Atwood house.

Soon after the settlement of New England the practice of dignifying the seats, and " seating the meeting house " was adopted. It is not such that seats were assigned by age or property by this clerk.
The seating at the anual meeting on the first monday of December 1785, had Jonathan seated on the right pillars next to the fore seat along with his brothers Asa and William.
After the laws were so modified that Quakers, Baptiste, and Episcopalians could exist in separate and legal corporate bodies, at this time many could " sign off " his legal connection with the old society.
In 1790 Jonathan signed off.

Jonathan Barnes, who had been the first to have Universalist sentiments in the town,
and who had held several controversies with Mr. Robinson, joined the Episcopal Church
and society of Cheshire. His withdrawal is as follows:

" Cheshire August 20, 1790. This may certifiy all whom it may concern that
Mr. Jonathan Barnes hath this day professed himself a member of the
Episcopal Congregation in Cheshire and hath subscribed for its future maintenance "

Jonathan did not enter the communion of the church in Cheshire, but simply paid their rates there.
Jonathan left the Congregational Church because of opposition from the pastor. Mr. Robinson. Jonathan was an influential man in the Episcopal parish, being the first in the town to adopt such view. He was a member of the Episcopal Church until his death.
