The third of at least eight children born to John & Jemima (Henderson) Board of England and Baltimore Co MD, respectively, and late of Bedford Co VA, James married Nancy Moorman in 1760 in Bedford Co VA.

In Dec 1998, because of Revolutionary War service in the Bedford County VA Militia, James Board Sr was declared a Patriot by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Anyone proving direct lineage from James is now eligible for membership in the Daughters or Sons of the American Revolution.

"James Board was paid for his service in the Bedford County Militia during the French and Indian War under the "Act for the Defence of the Frontiers of this Colony," passed by the General Assembly on Sep 14, 1758. At a meeting of the Bedford County Court on Mar 27, 1780, he proved to the satisfaction of the Court that he had served as a private in 1761 and 1762 in the 2d Virginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel William Byrd, III, and had been regularly discharged. He was allowed 50 acres of bounty land, under the provisions of the Proclamation of 1763."

"An Act for raising the Sum of Twenty-five Thousand Pounds, for the better protection of the Inhabitants on the Frontiers of this Colony, and for other purposes therein mentioned.

"I, JAMES BOARD, Senior of Breckinridge County State of Kentucky being of sound mind and disposing memory and knowing that altho I am at present in good health yet that it is decreed for all men to die and that from my advanced age. It is my will and wish that my body be decently buried at the direction of my excutiers hereafter named and that after the payment of all my just debts which at present are but small and all funeral expense that my executors cause my estate to be unmentioned and appraised agreeably to law and sold and the money arising from such sale is soles to be equally divided amongst my children. Much are now living and the decendant of these that are dead in manner following.
My son James Board late of Virginia having departed this life. I therefore devise to his five sons namely Henry Board, Christopher Board, Robert Board, Jefferson Board & William Board one twelfth and to my son William one twelfth. Part to Stephen Board one twelfth and to Elijah Board one twelfth one twelfth part to Micajah Board and twelfth part to Nehemiah Board, one twelfth part to the children of dec'd son Richard Board, one twelfth paid to Joel Board, one twelfth to my daughter Polly Dowell wife of Nehimiah Dowell, twelfth paid to the children of my deceased daughter Nancy Shewsbury, one twelfth to Elizabeth Board my daughter, one twelfth paid and to the children of my deceased daughter Jemima Dowell, one twelfth part and I have given to all my children who have married some property.
It is my wish that the division of my estate to be made without any account being made in taken of the property or any part of it which I may have heretofore give any of them, and I have also given my daughter Betsy Board some property which she has on my premises as she lives with me it is also my will that all the property which I have given her that she keep it, any account being taken of it that being given to her to make her equal with my other children it being my wish that to do justice in my family without partiality.
It is further my will and wish that my....pr(sic) of them as may act may and hereby authorized to sell my estate in such credit as they deem must beneficial to my legitees that even such a senseable credit of credits as they in their discretion may think proper without being compelled to make his distribution to the legiters faster than the money can reasonably be collected and it is my wish that my slaves should not be scattered or disposed of to strangers or speculators.
It is especially my will and desire that my excutors sell and dispose of nine of my negroes to any one except to my own children as to my grandson John Dowell and lastly I appoint my sons William Board, Nehemiah Board and Micajah Board or such of them as may qualify excutor or Excutors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me heretofore made and declaring this to be my true last will and testament.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribe my name suffixed my seal this 9 day of September 1825.

As James held Methodist services in his home in 1806 in Mount Zion, it is surmized he and his wife are buried here.
