From the Salem Children's Home website, 2004:

"The Salem Children's Home grew from the vision of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel King. They realized the need to care for orphans and donated their 100 acre farm for this purpose. In 1896, Salem Orphanage Association was founded, and on March 9, 1900, Salem Orphanage opened its doors with room to house 25 children."
