Traer Star Clipper, Traer, Iowa, Friday, August 25, 1944 – page 1
Etta Gaston, 91, pioneer resident of Traer and vicinity, died at her about 3 a. m. Wednesday. She was stricken with paralysis on Monday evening of last week. She did not suffer greatly, but gradually weakened---until death came. She was born April 14, 1853, in Columbus county, Ohio, and came to Tama county with her parents when one year old. She was from one of our first families her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh F . Gaston, having been among the earliest settlers of the community long before Traer was in existence. They came here in 1854 from Ohio settling on land one and one half miles northeast of Traer. At one time Mr. Gaston owned 500 acres. He gave up farming in 1904 and retired in east Traer where both he and his wife died within a year of each other several years later.
Etta who attended school in old West Union as a girl, never married but managed the home and took care of her parents during their later years and until they died. Since their passing she and her brother, Denver, continued to reside in the old home. Etta was the eldest of nine children, of whom only three are now living— Denver and Wallace, of Traer, and Mrs. Azalia Franzenberg, of Tacoma, Washington. Those who preceded Etta in death were her brothers, James, John and Willis, and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Barbour and Mattie.
The funeral service will be held this Friday at the States Funeral Home at 2:30 p. m. The Rev. B. T. Schwab, pastor of the Congregational church of which she was a member many years, will conduct the service. W. Walter Wilson, H. J. Whannell, Henry Sieh, Art Plogmann, Louis Markham and O. O. Owens, neighbors, will serve as casket bearers. Burial will be in Buckingham cemetery.
