THOS NEWLON, PIONEER, DEAD
Early Resident of Spokane Passes Away on Moran Prairie
Thomas Newlon, age 85, a pioneer mining and construction man of the northwest, died Monday at his farm on Moran Prairie.
After coming to Oregon from Illinois across the plains in 1853, he mined in California, Montana and Idaho, and constructed several bridges in the Spokane territory. He built the first bridge over the Spokane river at Trent, and was the first to bridge the Missoula river and Hangman creek. The first mill in Spokane and one of the first buildings on the site of the present city was built by Mr. Newlon.
He is survived by his widow, a son, Guy, and a daughter, Olivia, living at the Moran prairie home. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1 o'clock from the Moran church.
