Mrs. Gertrude Dalziel, who lived in Traer practically all of her life of 87 years, died Monday, October 30, in the Allen Memorial nursing home in Waterloo. She had been a patient in the Allen hospital and in the extended care facility several weeks. Mrs. Dalziel was born Gertrude Sarah Gates June 30, 1880, on a farm in Tama county, the daughter of Alvah Sr. and Mary Green Gates. Her father was a drayman and teamster in the early days of Traer. She was the oldest of their nine children, and only two sisters, Mrs. Alta Altenhein and Mrs. James (Zenaide) Dalziel, both of Traer, are now living.
On May 1, 1901, she was united in marriage to E. L. Fletcher at Traer. Four children were born to them — Mrs. Susie Alleta Koshatka, who passed away in 1949, Mrs. Orval (Wilma) Fink, now in Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Henry (Doris) Holst, near Clutier; and the son, Harvey, of Anita, Iowa. Mr. Fletcher died August 6, 1911. On September 10, 1919, his widow was married to David P. Dalziel of Traer at Waterloo. Mr. Dalziel died December 16, 1943.
Mrs. Dalziel and her sister, Mrs. Altenhein, lived in adjoining apartments in downtown Traer several years, until the former's illness several weeks ago for which she was hospitalized. Mrs. Dalziel was a member of the Methodist church of Traer 71 years. She became a member on August 2, 1896, and in the early years she served as church organist. She was also a member of the Rebekah lodge of Traer. In addition to her three living children and two sisters, she leaves six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Four brothers, two sisters, and one great grandchild preceded her in death.
Her funeral services were held yesterday in the Erickson Funeral home conducted by Rev, Myron Brockmeyer, Methodist pastor. Mrs. John Holmes was the vocalist, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Leland Sealock. Pall bearers were Louis Koshatka, Kenneth Gates, Tom Hamilton, Rodger Altenhein, Norman Kopecky and Harold Stavnes. Mr. and Mrs. Arlin HoIst and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Griffith were in charge of the flowers Interment was in Buckingham Cemetery.
