Harmon was the third of eight children born to John and Lucy (French) Austin. He was born in White Corners which didn't show up as being in Erie County. It was probably just a dot in the road. His siblings were Elizabeth, Calista, James, Ira, Phidelia "Della", Harriet and Sophia. This was a farming family. According to various census reports, Harmon was sometimes a farmer and sometimes a carpenter. Perhaps he did both from time to time.

In 1841 he married Jane R. Wilson in Hamburg NY. She died about a year later, and then in 1843 he married Elvira "Molly", daughter of James and Mary Polly (Brown) Parks. Harmon was 32 years old and Elvira was 20. The James Parks family lived next door to the John Austins in Hamburg.

Harmon and Elvira had five children - Perry born 1844, Lafayette born 1847, Herman born 1853, Cassius born 1855, and Emma born 1862.

In 1870 Harmon's father-in-law, John Austin, was living with the family in Hamburg. Harmon died in 1873, and by then he had moved to Alton KS.
