He was the son of the late Floyd and Lillie Lewis and was a life-long resident of the Charlottesville-Albemarle County area.
Floyd was preceded in death this year by his wife of 56 years, Doris Dearing Lewis, and by siblings William Lewis, George Lewis and Geneva Lewis Hurley.
After attending Jefferson High School in Charlottesville, Floyd began working as a waiter, a craft he perfected in area restaurants and during 40 years of service in dining cars on the C&O and Amtrak passenger trains. After his "retirement" from the railroad, Floyd continued working for nearly 20 more years -- bringing his unique bartending and catering skills to private events in the Central Virginia area and in service of recent Presidents of the University of Virginia.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army's 3104th Quartermaster Service with tours in Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France, and Central Europe. He was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Charlottesville on West Main Street and was a longtime member of the now defunct Joker's Social Club.
He is survived by two sons, Michael J. Lewis of McLean, VA and Mark L. Lewis of Arlington, VA; three grandchildren, Nicole Mitchell of Richardson, TX, Sara Lewis of Arlington, VA, and Matthew Lewis of Frederick, MD; and a host of loving nieces and nephews, along with many caring friends and a number of kind caregivers.
Services were held Tuesday December 14, 2010, at First Baptist Church on West Main Street.
Interment:
Holly Memorial Gardens
J. F. Bell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
