John Burkhalter (Buckhalter, Burckhalter, other spellings) was born about 1748 into a German-speaking Swiss family near Savannah GA. He was the son of Michael Burkhalter Jr. who was born 11 Feb. 1720 in Lutzelfluh, Berne, Switzerland. Miichael Burkhalter Jr. was age 15 when he migrated to the American Colonies with his father, Michael Burkhalter Sr. in 1735.

In 1755 John's father Michael Burkhalter, received land in the interior of South Carolina, and if the family didn't move there immediately, they did before 1769. In 1769, the area was Granville County which was discontinued in 1769 and then formed into 96 District and later Edgefield County.

John married about 1782 about age 34. His wife Anne was quite a few years his junior, probably about 17 years old at the time of their marriage. According to the census records, they had about 10 children all born in Edgefield County, S.C.

John and his family were listed in the 1790 census: 1 male >16 [John c42], 2 males 0-16 [Daniel 7, Elias 3], 3 females [Anne c25, daughter c5, daughter c2].

The family was included in the 1800 census:
1 m > 45 [John c52]
1 m 26-45 [who?]
2 m 10-16 [Daniel 17, Elias 13]
1 m 0-10 [John infant]

1 f 26-45 [Anne c35]
3 f 10-16 [dau c15, dau c12, dau 10]
2 f 0-10 [dau c6, Martha 2].

In early 1807, John's father Michael Burkhalter died in Edgefield Co. John was named in the will along with his brothers, sisters, and some of Michaels' grandchildren. John probably received some inheritance from the estate.

In May 1809, John Burckhalter made a mortgage to Thomas McDaniel for $242.93 3/4, using his 100 acres on Little Stephens Creek purchased in 1807 as collateral. The loan which was due on Dec 25 1809 would be void if the amount were properly repaid. (Deed Bk 29) John must have paid the loan, because in March 1810, he sold the land to Robert John for $450. The property had been resurveyed and found to contain 135 acres rather than 100. John signed with his initials IB. Not until Jan 1811 did Anne give her consent, signing with her initial A. (Deed Bk 32)

After the sale of John's Edgefield property in 1810-1811, John and Anne migrated to Putnam Co GA about 1811-1812. Their son Daniel had preceeded them into GA where he is included in the 1810 Baldwin Co tax list. Perhaps John lingered behind until he sold his property or perhaps Daniel's reports back home enticed the Burkhalter family to make the move to GA. Baldwin Co was adjacent to Putnam Co at this time. John Buckhalter appears in the 1813 Putnam Co GA tax list. The 1815 tax list of Putnam includes John Buckhalter, his son Elias, and Jeremiah Buckhalter (John's nephew). John and Elias were listed on the same page. Two of John's daughters married in Putnam Co.: Martha married Joseph Grant in 1818 and Harriet married Ebenezer Smith in 1821.

The year of 1815 is the last known record of John. At this time, he would have been about 67 years old, aged for the times. He was not the head of household for the 1820 GA census. He and Anne probably died in Putnam Co GA. His known children lived in GA, while some migrated into Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
