Jim served 22 years in the U.S. Air Force before retiring as a full Colonel. He flew 280 fighter-jet combat missions in Viet Nam and was a graduate of the National War College. His last military assignment was Vice Commandant of the USAF Command and Staff College.
Jim and his wife Mary Jarrard Lilly served ten years as Southern Baptist Home Missionaries with the Montgomery Baptist Association. He was Director of Counseling for First Baptist Church Montgomery before the couple returned to Georgia. He was currently a member of First Baptist Church Gainesville.
Col. Lilly is preceded in death by his wife Mary who died in 2006 and his father, Mr. Oscar J. Lilly, Jr.
Survivors include his mother, Helen Lilly of Gainesville, his children, daughter and son-in-law, Sherri and Tracy Bales of Dahlonega, son, Marc Lilly of Elberton, son and daughter-in-law, David and Carole Lilly of Sylva, NC, five grandchildren, Jessi Cannistraro, Nikki Lilly, Joe Cannistraro, Christopher Lilly and Sarah Lilly, his brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Peggy Lilly of Alpharetta and their decendants.
