Nellie was the daughter of James William Campbell and Martha Jane Young. She had two half brothers, Layfayette and William Henry Leewright. Her siblings included Harvey, John Andrew, Joseph Elihu and Marthy Emma Young.
On September 27, 1908, she married Samuel Jerome Wister Dawson, better known as Wis. Shortly after their fifth son was born in 1919 Wis died. Nellie reared her sons with the help of her mother. On November 9, 1924, she married Amzie DeWitt "Dee" Murray. Dee was a widower with three children, Vivian, David and DeOla. After their marriage, one more son was born to the family, JT Murray. Two of Nellie's sons were in the Navy during WWII. One gave his life for our country. After Dee's death, Nellie lived her remaining years in Magazine, Arkansas. She died at the age of 81.
