CARLSBAD--Agapito "Shorty" Cerda, 76, of Tenth Street, Carlsbad, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 1995, at Guadalupe Medical Center.
A Christian wake will be 7 p.m. today in the West Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at San Jose Catholic Church, Carlsbad, with the Rev. Tom Merrill officiating. Burial will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery.
Arrangements are by West Funeral Home, Inc.
He was born Aug. 10, 1919, in Comstock, Texas. He lived all over West Texas, farming in his teen years and repairing windmills. He came to Carlsbad in 1945 and worked for Red Wilson. Mr. Cerda worked for Joe Florez Concrete and Stucco for 35 years as a foreman. He did arts and crafts for the church, made altar pieces and built the courthouse model exhibited in the Stevens Inn.
Survivors include wife Tavita "Tommie" Cerda of Artesia; step-daughter Juanita Ann Matta; sisters Amelia C. Acevedo and Laura Meridith, both of San Angelo, Texas, Juanita Martinez of Dallas, and Viola Jones of Santa Maria, Calif.; four step-grandchildren, two step-great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be David Gonzales, Frank Bubser, Norman D. Gallegos, Jose Mario Salinas, Danny Gonzles and Ben Mendoza.
