Sherrill "Shaun" Nielsen

Sherrill "Shaun" Nielsen, Age 68 years old, of Cullman, Alabama, passed away on Friday, December 10, 2010. His Wife, Brenda Hall Nielsen was by his side.
Sherrill, was born on September 10, 1942 in Montgomery, Alabama to his Parents; Charlie Whitaker and Virginia Evelyn Jackson. He graduated from the Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery and, then he attended the Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tennessee.
He served his country with pride while serving in the Air Force with the Air Force Strategic Command Band in Omaha, Nebraska.
Sherrill, was blessed with an amazing God given ability, and that ability was his wonderful singing voice. He started singing at the age of only four years old at the Nazarene Church in Montgomery where he and his family attend Church. At the age of 14 years old, he won the Mr. America Youth Singer Contest, at the Coliseum in Montgomery. He cut his first professional solo LP at the age of 15 years old, and it was titled, "A Name I Highly Treasure." In the year of 1961 he joined the Speer Family Singing Group, and while singing with the Gospel group he was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Later in the early 1960's Sherrill got together with the Gospel Singer, Jake Hess. He and Hess formed the Illustrious Imperial Gospel Quartet, and after the forming of the Quartet he won another introduction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. In the year of 1966 Sherrill moved to the state of California, where he rejoined the group, called the Songfellows Quartet. He also had the honor of working with many Gospel groups, and they include the following; Plainsmen, Tom Paul and the Glaser Brothers, the Hovie Lister and the Sensational Statesmen, the Masters V, and with Elvis Presley and the group called the Voice. It's well known that Elvis Presley's favorite singer, was Sherrill Nielsen. He joined Elvis' after previously singing at the Grand Ole Opry, and he preformed with Elvis till the passing of Elvis on August 16, 1977. After Elvis, Sherrill worked with some of the groups stated above, and he preformed solo as well.
In the year of 1990 Sherrill moved to Denmark, and that is where he lived and wrote Gospel songs for 14 years. While in Denmark he introduced many Churches to Southern Gospel Music, and he traveled and preformed concerts in parts of Europe.
In June of the year 2004 he moved to Houston, Texas after getting remarried to the love of his life, Brenda Hall. He and Brenda had married on December 12, 1963, and they were the Parents of one Daughter, SherRee' Elicia Nielsen.
In later years, Sherrill and Brenda preformed together, and they traveled much of the world. Recently, a Gospel group called, Sherrill Nielsen and VOICE was put together, and the members were Sherrill, Mike Martin, Nick Fike, and Sean McCaw.
During his 50 year Gospel Career, Sherrill received many wonderful and honoring awards, and he received a Proclamation from the Governor of the state of Alabama. In June 2011, Sherrill was to be honored by the Music City Gospel Showcase as, the "Pioneer and Legendary Performer."
In March of 2010 Sherrill, was diagnosed with Lung Cancer, and he lost his battle on Friday, December 10, 2010.
Preceding him in death are his grandparents, Christian Richard and Virgie Lee Jeter. His grandparents adopted him. He was also preceded in death by, a daughter, SherRee' Elicia Nielsen, who was killed by a drunk driver.
Survivors include his wife and the love of his life, Brenda Hall Nielsen. Sister, Sharon Stoenner, Sister, Jane Whitaker, Brother, Steve Stoenner, and Brother, Gary Whitaker. Cousins, Dr. John Nielsen, Tommy Nielsen, Christian Nielsen and their sister, Nancy Davis.
A Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon on Thursday, December 16th until 2:00 PM. The Great Southern Gospel Concert and HOMECOMING CELEBRATION of Sherrill's life and ministry will be conducted at 2:00 PM. All services will be held in the Family Life Center at the First Church of Nazarene in Cullman, Alabama, with Pastor Aaron Coffey officiating the service. Burial will be in Tyler, Texas at the Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery, next to his Daughter, Elicia.
Sherrill, touched many life's and heart's during his lifetime, and he will be forever loved and missed by his family, and many friends, and all who knew him.
