Ruth Hafely Brobst
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Ruth Hafely Brobst, a former resident and teacher in Howland and
Liberty townships in Trumbull County, died on June 1, 2006, from cancer in Fort Collins, Colo.
She was 90.
Born in Girard on Feb. 22, 1916, she taught elementary grades full-time for several years in
Liberty, Champion and Mecca townships. Later, she was a substitute teacher in Howland Township
and for the Warren City Schools.
Mrs. Brobst attended Liberty Township School in Churchill for all 12 grades and did not miss a day
after the second grade. She won a state award in Algebra and was a well-known high school
basketball player. She earned her teaching certificate in elementary education at Kent State University
in 1936-37. She was an avid bridge player, bowler and traveler.
She met her future husband, the late William E. Brobst, while both taught at Mecca. They were married
in 1943 and both devoted their lengthy careers, totaling more than 65 years, to educating thousands
of local youngsters.
After her husband retired in 1976 as head of federal education programs, including Head Start, for
the Warren City Schools, Mr. and Mrs. Brobst moved to Hendersonville, N.C. Mr. Brobst died there in
late 1981, and Mrs. Brobst remained in Hendersonville until late 1998, when she moved to Fort Collins.
The daughter of the late Ernest A. and Ethel Johnson Hafely, Mrs. Brobst had the following nine
brothers and sisters: Betty, Esther, George, Jack, Mabel, Paul, twin brother Ralph, Reed and Shirley.
All were raised on a 37-acre farm in Liberty near where she was born.
A brother, George Hafely of Girard and sister, Betty Hafely Miller of Tracy, Calif. survive. She also
is survived by three sons, Douglas and his wife Judy of Fort Collins; James of Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, usa;
William and his wife Linda of Germantown, Md.; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Mrs. Brobst will be buried next to her husband in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina
at the Shepherd Memorial Park near Hendersonville. Plans for a small, private graveside service
are pending.
The family suggests that any donations in Mrs. Brobst's memory be made to the college scholarship
fund of the Trumbull County Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) c/o Ruby Hawkins, Financial
