Theodore Cowherd enlisted as a soldier in the Confederate Army on August 15, 1861. He served as a Private in Company F of the 4th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry of the famous Kentucky “Orphan” Brigade, CSA, during the War Between the States. Cowherd fought at Shiloh, where he was severely wounded on 6 April 1862. Fought at Baton Rouge, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, and Resaca (where he was wounded in the right cheek, 14 May 1864).

Fought at Dallas, Peachtree Creek, and Intrenchment Creek (Atlanta), where he was wounded on 22 July 1864, and his right arm was amputated. Paroled 25 May 1865 at the hospital in Johnsonville, TN; described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a fair complexion, dark hair, and hazel eyes. Theodore married Isabelle W. McDowell, June 1869. They lived in Oldham Co., where he taught school, and later worked in the Louisville Public Works Dept.
Cause of death: paralysis.

of Yelverton Cowherd.
