MONTROSE: Rubin Amado "Speedy" Arellano, age 93, passed away at his home in Montrose, Colo. on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010. Rubin was born on Dec. 13, 1916 in Capulin, Colo. to Jesus and Cedelia (Valdez) Arellano. He spent his childhood and attended school in Capulin.

In 1942, Rubin enlisted in the United States Army during WWII and proudly served his country in Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Southern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe as a rifle marksman during WWII. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, a Silver Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the Distinguished Medal Emblem.

Following his discharge, he married Elisa Gallegos and they lived in Monte Vista, Colo. before settling in Montrose. Rubin worked for the Bureau of Reclamation, constructing many well known landmarks in western Colorado. He was the first person to bore through the Eisenhower Tunnel on Interstate 70, and worked on the Aspinall Unit, consisting of the Morrow Point Dam, the Blue Mesa Dam and the Crystal Dam. Rubin was a high scaler. His job consisted of rappelling down the face of the mountain and drilling dynamite in the rock wall. An avalanche occurred during construction of the Blue Mesa Dam. Rubin saved his fellow worker by grabbing him as he flew down. Before he retired, he finished the Ridgway Dam.

Rubin is survived by his sons, Daniel (Patricia) Arellano of Montrose, Lee (Lynn) Gallegos of Montrose; his daughters, Theresa (Manuel) Leyva of Montrose, Mary Archuleta of Grand Junction, Colo., Elva (Kenny) Leonardo of Durango, Colo.; his sisters, Stella Velarde of Pueblo, Colo., Dora Montes of Pueblo; and his brothers, Ernesto Arellano of Pueblo and Fares of Arellano of Pueblo, as well as 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
