LINCOLN - Adaire Margaret Downing McKean, 88, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010 at her home in Lincoln.

She was born Jan. 11, 1922 in New York City, the daughter of Robert B. Downing and Beatrice Couture McKean.

She graduated from Nyack High School in Nyack, N.Y. She graduated May 27, 1969 at Rockland Community College as a Medical Office Assistant.

She was involved with Elmwood Community Playhouse Inc. in Nyack, where she married her husband, William W. McKean on Oct. 12, 1970 and he predeceased her Dec. 22, 2001.

She was a member of Bristol Historical Society, where she served as treasurer, Lincoln Historical Society, St. Ambrose Catholic Church, where she served as treasurer, Federated Woman's Club of Middlebury, Middlebury Garden Club, Vermont State Garden Club, where she served as President. She enjoyed and loved to watch sports on television, listening to the opera, traveling, and spending time with children.

Adaire is survived by her step-son, Thomas and Elizabeth McKean of Monkton; two step- daughters, Martha and David Elliot of Cody, Wyo., Kathleen and Randy Piper of Warsaw, Ind.; her step- grandchildren, Thomas and Brenda McKean Jr. of Starksboro, Nicole and James Fitzcharles of Weybridge, Anne Kurek of Bristol, Valerie Cassidy of Castleton, Paul and Lindsay Elliot of Tulsa, Okla., Jason and Anga Elliot of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Tiffany Elliot of Cody, Wyo., Nathan Packer of Nashville, Tenn., Kelly and Diego of Warsaw, Ind.; several step-great- grandchildren. Predeceased by her two brothers, Robert L. Downing and Rossa M. Downing.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 20 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Bristol. Interment will be in Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery in Bristol.

Friends may call at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol on Sunday, Dec. 19 from 4 to 6 p.m.
