Born in Xewkija, Gozo, on March 20, 1922, to Francis and Teresa Attard, Friar Dionysius Attard O.Carm., received his early education at Xewkija's Primary School and the Bishop's Seminary of Victoria.

Joining the Carmelite Order in November 1939, he made his novitiate at Mdina's priory, taking simple vows on November 24, 1940 and successively solemn vows on November 28, 1943. After successfully concluding his studies in theology and philosophy at the prioies of Mdina and St. Julians, he was ordained to the priesthood by Msgr. Michael Gonzi at St. John's Co-Cathedral of Valletta, on April 6, 1946.

Following his ordination he was assigned to the Carmelite Priory of Valletta, where he began lecturing at the Marian Apostolic School, which would later become the St. Elias College. He also served as confessor the numerous youths.

In 1949, Friar Dionysius was sent to Rome, Italy, for further studies at the International College of St. Albert. He obtained a degree in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University on March 27, 1953.

Back in Malta he was assigned to the Priory of St. Julians where he lectured canon law, theology and philosophy to the Carmelite Students. For fourteen years, between 1953 and 1967, he served as Regent of Studies at the College of St. Cyrillus of St. Julians and later as Lecturer of Canon Law at the INSERM from 1968 till 1987.

Furthermore he served as vicar provincial, provincial counsellor, member of the Presbyterial Council and of the Commission for the Maltese Episcopal Conference, Defensor Vinculi and judge of the Regional Tribunal of the Seconda Stanza of the Archdiocese of Malta. He also served as examiner of canon law for the Bishops' Seminary of Gozo and judge of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of the latter Diocese.

For several years he served as prior of St. Julian's Carmelite Priory, taking care among others of the construction of the Balluta Carmelite Church, of which the first stone was laid in 1953. A keen orator and confessor to many, Friar Dionysius passed away at Mater Dei Hospital on Monday, November 22, 2010, at 22.15 pm., aged 88, after an eight day recovery.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at Balluta's Carmelite church, followed by interment in one of the vaults (9A), which the Maltese Carmelite Province has as the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery of Paola.
