Vincenzo Mannella, 48, former employer of Victor Peirce, was shot dead near his North Fitzroy home on January 9, 1999. Vincenzo had served time behind bars for shooting an owner of a cafe which had barred him for acting tough and carring a loaded gun. He was under police attention as a possible source of chemicals during the drug squad's mid 1990s Operation Phalanx. Vincenzo was a heavy gambler with large debts.
