Loraine Greer Boyd Gray, 101, of Pascagoula, MS, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2017 in Pascagoula. Loraine was born on December 5, 1915 in Lincoln County, MS to the late John W. and Ella B. Greer. She enjoyed attending church, and cooking delicious meals for her family. She worked at the shipyard during World War II and earned the nickname “Bertha the Burner”, for her outstanding work ethic and for outworking four men at once. She was also a part of the first all female crew to launch a ship during the war, the US Sea Quail.
In addition to her parents, Loraine was preceded in death by her first husband, R.V. Boyd; second husband, George W. Gray; sons, Edwin Boyd and Roland Dale Boyd; and siblings, Melvin Greer, Henry Hosley Greer, Nile Greer, Ollie Lambert, Irene Thompson, Infant Baby Girl, John Robert Greer, Givens Greer, Myrtie Lou Stinson, Mildred Bardwell, Ella Mae Brister, Leslie Carr, Evans Greer, and Tera Belle Brister.
She is survived by her daughter, Lynda G. (Billy) Vice; grandchildren, Karen (Robert) Tyson, Lisa (Joe) Martinez, Amy Boyd, Dale Boyd Jr., Kris Boyd Speed, Gary (Frankie) Vice, Michael (Lori) Vice, Kelly Vice (Skip) Roberts; along with numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
The visitation for Loraine will be held on Friday, September 1, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home in Escatawpa, MS. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Joe Spence officiating. Interment will follow at Jackson County Memorial Park in Pascagoula with Robert Ronan, Michael Vice, Skip Roberts, Kris Speed, Austin Dominey, and Willard Boyd serving as pallbearers.
Heritage Funeral Home, locally owned and operated, in Escatawpa/Moss Point, MS is in charge of arrangements.
