In the 1950s, he married Estelle, and to this union five children were born. They moved to Hayti, where he worked as a farmer until his health failed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, and one sister.
He leaves the following survivors: three daughters, Bertha Sykes, Charleston, Millie Sykes, and Katrina Spain, all of Hayti; five sons, Richard Sykes, Jr. of Malden, Steven Thompson, Larry Sykes, and Johnny Spain, all of Hayti, and Henry Sykes of Milwaukee, Wis.; a brother, Steve Sykes of Palm Beach, Fla.; for sisters, Helen McCoy, Bertha Hughes, Mattie Tyler, and Thelma Sykes, all of Chicago, Ill.; ten stepdaughters, Bobby, Mary, Martha, Carol, Carolyn, Annie Reed, and Joanne, Billie, and Diane Brown; 63 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; a special friend, Mrs. Corean Reed of Hayti; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were held on Saturday, November 21, 1998, t 2 p.m. at the Tabernacle of Love Church in Hayti, woith the Rev. Bobby Patterson officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery in Hayti.
Pall Bearers were the following: Ad Hamilton, Walter Jones, Robert Goodman, Ira Harris, Joe Bob Jones, Henry Hamilton, and Tony Hayes. Carter Funeral Home was in charge of services.
