Karl Herkelmann was born in Hagen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, July 25, 1832. He immigrated to the United States in 1853 and headed for the gold fields of California. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for 3 years at Angels Camp September 21, 1861, and was mustered into Company G, 2nd California Infantry, October 2, as "Charles Herkelman(n)". Charles married Sophia Rutenbeck in California September 11, 1863. Private Herkelman(n) was mustered out at Fort Yuma, California, September 21, 1864 (Orton: Charles Herkleman, p. 480). Charles and Sophia settled in Clinton County, Iowa, where Charles filed for a Civil War veteran's pension November 13, 1890. He received application No. 910,151 and certificate No. 666,351. Shortly after Charles' death Sophia filed for a widow's pension February 6, 1918, and received application No. 1,114,630 and certificate No. 877,179.
