Della was born in Lincoln Co, KY to John Spratt and to an unknown mother in 1883. By 1900 Della was working as a servant for the Link Family in Arcola, Douglas Co., IL. She married Hiram A. Thornton in 1901. Together the couple had two daughters. After her husband almost died from gunshot wounds from a duel fought in Arcola as the city's marshall, Della and her family moved to Knox Co., Ind.. Both daughters died at an early age.
