George Eckert was born in the village of Gross Bieberau in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany. On 26 Feb. 1835 he married (Catharina) Elisabetha Germann, who was from the same village, in St. Louis, Missouri, at Holy Ghost United Church of Christ. Their first child, (Catharina) Elisabetha Eckert was born in St. Clair County, Illinois, on 24 June 1836. He began as a cabinet maker--then eventually built the City Hotel on the main street in Belleville. There he was the hotel proprietor and a maltster. George and Elisabetha raised their family in Belleville.
Recently a distant cousin in Germany, who has been working with two in the U.S., has compiled an history of George's ancestors back to those born in the 1500's. I would be happy to share this information with any descendants of this family.
