∼First President of Pennsylvania. Thomas Wharton was one of twenty-five men who formed the Committee of Safety, which was Pennsylvania's governing body at the outset of the American Revolution. On 24 July 1776 he became president of the Committee and was part of the drafting process of the new constitution for the state. On 28 September 1776 the new constitution was adopted, and on a joint ballot of the Council and the General Assembly, Wharton was elected the first President of the Council. When Wharton died in Lancaster, he was buried within the wall of the Evangelical Trinity Church in Lancaster.
