The son of Thomas & Selinda (Bechtol) McCombs, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but later lived in Providence Township, Lancaster County. He stood 5' 5" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the of eighteen in Lancaster County June 13, 1864, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. K, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pennsylvania). On June 17, 1865, as part of a war end consolidation, he transferred to Co. K, 1st Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company July 13, 1865.

He married Susan Snyder and fathered Sarah S. (b. 12/28/67 - married Martin S. Lewis), Elizabeth (b. 12/03/69 - married Frank R. Ashby), Emma D. (b. 03/21/73 - married Frank E. McClure), and Amos Elmer (b. 06/29/76). No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive. The widowed Sarah married James McClune.
