Abigail Childs, the youngest of the six children of Amelia "Lydia" (née Kingsley) and Deacon Jonas Henry Childs, was born about 1827 in Bainbridge Township, Geauga County, Ohio. Her parents, born and married in Becket, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, had moved their family from Berkshire County to Bainbridge Township in the winter of 1818, and were among the township's earliest settlers.

Abigail Childs and Theodore Burgess were married on 27 October 1846 in Bainbridge Township. The couple and an infant son were enumerated there in 1850, living on Deacon Childs' farm. Theodore was then working as a farmer. The couple may have moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1852, when Deacon Childs retired and sold his farm.

The couple are believed to have had four children, of whom two survived both parents. Abigail Burgess, age 52, died on 24 March 1879 in Cleveland from tuberculosis.
