Paul was born in Abbotsville, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Adelaide (South) Slaybaugh from the Gettysburg area.

His father died when he was seven and he spent five years in orphanages, and then came to live with a maternal uncle in Thebes Illinois. In 1919 Paul and his mother moved to Murphysboro where they both lived for the rest of their lives.

He married Velma Smith from Percy, Illinois. One son, Charles Slaybaugh was born in 1936. Velma is buried in Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro Illinois.

He married Thelma (Saul) Ingram May 12, 1949, in Corinth, Mississippi.

Paul and Lyle Turton formed a partnership and for many years operated 'Turton and Slaybaugh Motors' on East 14th St. in Murphysboro. Lyle did the sales of Dodge and Desoto automobiles and Paul did the mechanical repairs. For a few years they also operated the swimming pool in Ward's Park.

Paul loved to dance. He would drive hundreds of miles for an evening of dancing with Thelma to the music of the popular bands, especially the "big bands" of the thirties. He knew and was known by every major band leader in the country.

He was a life member and past worthy president of the Eagles, an avid gardener, a member of the senior citizens, Jackson County Farm Bureau, American Association of Retired Persons, First Christian Church and the men's group of his Sunday school class.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or to the cemetery.
