Death of E. Henry Barnard, an Aged Resident of Mendon

E. Henry Barnard, of Mendon, born in 1808 in Connecticut, died yesterday morning at the home of his son, Frederick Barnard, near the line of Pittsford, on the original tract of land purchased in the last decade of the last century by the Barnard family of which Hon. Judge Timothy Barnard, Sr., was a member, and who with his wife and five children, came a pioneer to the country when E. Henry, the youngest, was 18 months old. The name of Judge Timothy Barnard, Sr., appears in the records of the organization, in 1813, of the town of Mendon. He was the moderator of the first town meeting, was made one of the town officers and in 1815 took part in the organization of the first Presbyterian church of Mendon. His son, the late Timothy Barnard, Jr., came to be known as "Young Judge Barnard." One daughter became the late Mrs. Alexander Voorhees, of Pittsford; another always remained and was beloved as Miss Harriet Barnard, while the late Daniel D. Barnard, won a national reputation for his legal abilities and in his official positions of member of Congress and subsequently minister plenipotentiary to one of the European courts. E. Henry Barnard was a highly esteemed gentleman and although he pursed the vocation of a farmer, was educated at the Belvedere military school, of Middletown, Conn. He married Miss Sophia Griswold, of Hartford, an accomplished lady whose memory is cherished among the other inhabitants of Pittsford, in which town the church and social relations of the family were established. The children of Mr. Barnard were all born at the home farm in Mendon, and are: Mrs. Sol Smith, of Geneva; Frederick, Henry and Miss Jennie Barnard, of Pittsford. One of the grand children is the wife of Ensign Craven, a military officer located at Washington.
