He married on March 13, 1819, in Pickaway County, Ohio, to Sarah Zehrung, daughter of John Zehrung and Maria Elizabeth Barbara Bayer. They were the parents of 9 known children: Mary Barbara, Henry, Sophia, John Zehrung, Daniel, William, Samuel, Catherine and Joseph Sanford Valentine, Jr.

"George Decker, executor of Joseph Valentine's estate, placed Joseph's personal property on public auction. The sale brought in $328.42. Known family names that appear on the list of purchasers include: Reason Chalfant, Sarah Chalfant, Barbara Metzger, Harriet Valentine, J. E. Valentine, Joseph Valentine, Joseph E. Valentine, Levi Valentine, Ellen Valentine and John Zerring. The total value of Joseph's estate was $12,372.69. This was distributed in five equal parts, to Joseph S. Valentine, Henry Valentine's estate, John Valentine's estate, Barbara Metzger, and Catharine Chalfant. In accordance with Joseph's will, George divided Joseph's 160 acre farm, known as the 'Old Valentine Farm,' into two 80 acre lots. These lots were sold at the court house door on June 21, 1873. John Van Horn bought one lot and Reason Chalfant bought the other."
