Born Helena Josephina Jansson in Dalum Parish, Albsborg lan, Sweden, she preferred Josephine. She and her family arrived in this country from Sweden in 1864 and settled in Rockford, Illinois. Her father changed the family name to Lindberg upon arrival in the United States. Soon after settling in Rockford her mother became ill and died. This was about the time of President Lincoln's assassination. At the young age of 9 and being from another country she did not understand the circumstances. Why so much fuss was being made over this one man. The news paper accounts, the mourning banners, the funeral train back to Springfield. And yet she had lost a mother and no one had made such a fuss over her death. She married Robert Lavis in Rockford, Illinois. Together they had two children, George and Charlotte May "Lottie". After George's death she married John Farrell and had a daughter, Marie. John and Josephine later divorced. She traveled all over the United States working from Illinois to Arizona and California to Minnesota and Iowa. At the time of her death she was a nurse in Des Moines, Iowa.
