Leroy was killed in action June 7, 1918, at Chateau Thierry while serving with the 2nd Division. He was buried August 7, 1921. More than 200 cars were in the funeral procession from Westminster Hall in Gardner.
“Never, in the history of Gardner has a funeral been so largely attended. The main floor, galleries, and entry were filled and almost as many were unable to gain admission.” His brothers Earl and Raymond also served in World War I. Besides these brothers and his parents surviving, he had a brother George and a sister Marie.
The soldiers in his unit, writing to Leroy’s parents, reported, “The night Leroy was wounded we did some of our most effective work against the enemy and in history this battle was one when the Americans saved a great loss.”
