DERBY - Sontag, Jr., William "Bill", 55, lifelong son of Derby, husband, father, brother and friend to many, died the morning of Monday, January 3, in his home. Bill lived a life blessed with many friends and family. He never missed a Kansas State game, a trip to the Walnut Valley Bluegrass festival, or a chance to make merry with those dear to him. An outdoorsman all his life; fishing, hunting, hiking, backpacking and skiing were his way of communing with the church of the great outdoors. A graduate of Kansas State University, Bill found his calling in sales and in running his own business on more than one occasion, most recent as mobility manager at Jay Hatfield Mobility. Whatever activity he was engaged in, his life cast a wide net on people touched by his cheerful personality and down to earth demeanor. Another reason for Bill's lifelong passion for K-State was that he met the love of his life there, Julia Clare Minihan. College sweethearts, Bill and Julie married shortly after finishing their time at the university. They honeymooned on a grand trip, driving through the Rockies and down the western seaboard before settling down to begin their careers and raise a family. They had three children together, a daughter and two sons whom they raised in Bill's childhood home where he grew up with his parents, brother and four sisters. He is preceded in death by his parents William, Sr. and Maxine. Survivors include his wife, Julie; children, Tyler and Logan of Wichita and Ali of Derby; siblings, David (Sharon) Sontag of Wichita, Greta Sontag of Moore, OK., Theresa Sontag of Dallas, TX., Charlotte (Dwight) Strouse of Dallas, TX., Stephanie (Jeff) Haney of Derby; 24 nieces and nephews and many friends. Viewing: Thursday, January 6, 2011 from noon-8pm at Smith Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby, with family present from 5-7 p.m. Services: 10 a.m., Friday, January 7, 2011, First Presbyterian Church, 324 N. Baltimore, Derby. Memorials to K-State Endowment Fund, Ks. Dept. of Wildlife and Parks or St. Mary Faith Center Building Fund.
