He was the son of Nicholas & Ann Amos.

He married Julia A. Matheny and they brought their family to Jackson County, Missouri in 1855.

They came to this place from Louisville, Kentucky by boat on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. They came up the Missouri River, as far as Roachport, aboard the "David Tatum". From there they used their teams and wagons.

He purchased land and it is said he built the first house in VanBuren township. It was a double log cabin.

He was a slave holder and when the Civil War broke out and Order # 11 was issued they were forced to leave Jackson County until after the war.

He and his wife both died in 1888, he was 78 years old.
