Professional Boxer. A ranked heavyweight contender of the late 1980s, he lost but once in 38 bouts. Raised in London from infancy, he fought out of Chatham, Kent, won his first professional contest in 1984 against Al Malcolm, and over the next five years developed a reputation as a feared puncher. Mason captured the vacant British heavyweight crown with a fourth round knockout of Hughroy Currie in 1989, but was to suffer a detached retina either in a 1990 victory over Everett Martin, or sparring with Frank Bruno. He was still undefeated when he fought future world champion Lennox Lewis for the European title on March 6, 1991; stopped in the seventh round by TKO, and further exaccerbating his eye injury, his career was effectively ended. In 1993 he appeared on the television series "Gladiators", but returned to the ring in 1994; after winning two fights in the United States he retired for good having taken 34 of his 37 professional victories by knockout. Mason played three professional rugby games for the London Broncos and ran a jewelry store called Punch 'N' Jewelry; he was killed when his bicycle was struck by a van.
