Mr. Phillips was the son of Elber Phillips (1850-1908), and Mary Scott Phillips (1852-1927). He married Vinnie Rowan Phillips (1880-1973); daughter of William J. and Jane Findley Rowan, on August 25, 1900, by G.W. White. Mr. Phillips was a farmer by occupation. He was employed for a time by U.S. Senator H.G. Davis. He worked in the stables doing various jobs on the senator's estate in Elkins, West Virginia. George and Vinnie had nine children; Ralph, Ray, Ruth, Russell, Reta, Ruby, Robert, Roy George, and Roxie Jane.
