He enlisted on August 28, 1862 at Rochester, New York, and he was mustered into Company C, 13th New York Volunteer Infantry the same day. He was 44 years of age at the time of his enlistment.
He was transferred to Company H on April 21, 1863.
He was then transferred to Company H, 140th New York Volunteer Infantry on June 26, 1863.
He was wounded in the right side of his head on July 2, 1863 during the heavy fighting on the slopes of Little Round Top. The left side of his body was paralyzed as a result of his wounding.
He died on July 8 at the 2nd Division, V Corps Hospital.
He was initially buried east of Michael Fiscel's farm.
He was later reinterred in the New York Plot in the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Section C, Site #64.
